PROJECT INFORMATION
A Parametric Design for Socially Responsible Urban Upliftment
The Urban Shelf project in Matheran exemplifies The Design Plexus’s commitment to socially responsive urban design. Commissioned to address both aesthetic decay and disorderly commerce along a garden perimeter, this intervention transforms a passive compound wall into an active, multi-functional public amenity. The resulting parametric design, meticulously executed with durable WPC baffles, seamlessly integrates vital community functions. The structure incorporates dedicated horizontal display shelves and ergonomic vendor seating, relocating local shoe sales off the congested footpath. This strategic move professionalizes the retail experience, ensuring a respectful setting for vendors and significantly enhancing the visual appeal and pedestrian flow for tourists.
This project is conceived as a model for financially autonomous public infrastructure. Beyond its role in aesthetic and social upliftment, the wall features a strategic allocation for advertising space on its inner face, making it a viable revenue-generating asset for local governance. This self-sustaining economic model ensures long-term maintenance and viability, underscoring how multi-functional design can effectively balance community needs, spatial optimization, and fiscal responsibility within a cherished urban landscape.
